Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has submitted a new bill to Parliament that will stop the import, purchase and sale of firearms and block their passage through Canada, the latest step towards restricting weapons.
Prime Minister Trudeau presented the new bill in Parliament at a press conference Monday afternoon with Public Safety Minister Marco Mendisin in Ottawa.
“It is no longer possible to buy, sell, transfer or import handguns anywhere in Canada. In other words, we are restricting the firearms market,” said Prime Minister Trudeau. “As we see gun violence continue to increase, it is our duty to continue to act.”

While arguing that most gun owners in Canada are responsible, Trudeau added, “However, there is no reason why anyone in Canada should need guns in their daily life, except that guns are used for shooting sports and hunting.”
Trudeau also said the government had previously considered working with states that wanted a complete ban on guns, but the proposals were rejected after discussions with law enforcement and other experts.
The bill also includes other plans to combat illegal arms trafficking and enact a “red flag” law that would allow Canadian law enforcement to compel gun owners to dispose of their guns if they are deemed dangerous to themselves or others.
All magazines for rifles and other long guns will also be permanently replaced to hold no more than five rounds at a time, and large-capacity magazines will not be allowed to be sold or given away.
The bill is the second major gun restriction imposed by the Trudeau government in recent years, after the Trudeau government banned 1,500 different firearms in 2020, including rifles called “assault rifles” by former Public Safety Secretary Bill Blair.
In 2020, Trudeau said, “These weapons are designed for one purpose and one purpose: to kill the greatest number of people in the shortest amount of time,” adding: “There is no spot or place for such weapons in Canada.”
