The twentieth “pride march” of gays took place in the streets of Jerusalem for the first time since these marches began twenty years ago.
Hebrew media reported that about 7,000 people participated in the “gay march” that began in Jerusalem on Thursday night.
13. The Hebrew Channel said it witnessed the widespread participation of Israeli officials led by Knesset Spokesperson Mickey Levy in the march.
And the newspaper “Yediot Aharonot” announced that Levy will deliver a speech at a gay march in Jerusalem to become the first Knesset speaker to attend such an event.
Israeli police announced in a statement that thousands of their members would be deployed to ensure the march to the meeting places and nearby streets.
The statement added that “this will allow a planned (anti-march) protest to take place nearby while reassuring participants, avoiding conflict, and maintaining freedom of expression and protest as a matter of law.”
Most religious Jews opposed the march, and in 2015 an Israeli woman was killed and six others were injured in a knife attack on participants in an ultra-Orthodox Jew’s gay march.
