Flight between Portugal and China resumes after more than six months of suspension

The air connection between Portugal and China will resume on June 11, with the frequency of one flight a week, after being suspended for more than six months.

A source from Beijing Capital Airlines confirmed to the Lusa agency the resumption of the only air connection between Portugal and East Asia.

The authorities of the Chinese city of Xian, capital of the province of Shaanxi, suspended the link with Lisbon on December 25. at a time when the region was facing an outbreak of Covid-19. On January 23, the city resumed domestic flights, but kept international connections suspended.

The flight was then left with an uncertain status, being systematically cancelled, week after week.

Under the strategy of zero cases of Covid-19, China has kept its borders practically closed since March 2020.

China calls WHO criticism of zero Covid-19 policy ‘irresponsible’

The country authorizes only one flight per city and per airline, which reduced the number of international air connections to the country by 98%, compared to the pre-pandemic period.
