On Friday, the Iraqi Federal Intelligence and Investigation Agency announced that it had foiled a drug smuggling operation through a glider in Basra.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the agency said the operation took place after “receiving information that a glider was present in the skies of Basra province in the Jerishan area.”
“A joint task force consisting of intelligence groups operating in Basra province and the 14th Border Guard Brigade was formed, combing the area and firing at the plane,” he explained.
The agency noted that as a result of the combing operation, “the pilot was forced to lower it” and, without naming the country, was able to “escape to the border strip of a neighboring country”.
“A search is under way to find him, and drug pills, estimated at one million, have been seized with the intention of smuggling them into Iraq,” he confirmed.
