Authorities from the “Taliban Movement” have announced that they have appointed an Emirati company to manage passenger and baggage security screening services at four Afghan airports, including the airport in the capital, Kabul.
The UAE General Authority for Civil Aviation (GAAC) has assigned security controls to passengers and baggage at the airports of Kabul, Herat (west), Kandahar (south) and Mazar-i-Sharif (north), according to a joint statement from the company along with the Afghan Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.
Ibrahim Marafi, the authority’s regional director, said the signed three -year contract would “restore the confidence of foreign airlines to re -operate their flights.”
And UAE authorities had previously signed a new 18-month contract with the Afghan Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation in late May to provide ground services at Kabul, Kandahar and Herat airports.
The authority has been providing such services at Kabul airport since November 2020 and played an important role in its rehabilitation after the events in August.
The effective restart of Kabul’s airport is an important condition for the recovery of the collapsed Afghan economy. Currently, the airport is managed by the Afghan Ministry of Transport, with the help of the General Civil Aviation Authority of the United Arab Emirates and experts from Qatar.
A group of Qatari and Turkish companies have been negotiating with the Taliban for months to operate the airports of Kabul, Kandahar, Herat, Mazar-i-Sharif and Khost. However, these negotiations reached a dead end, as the Taliban demanded that they take over security.
Talks also continue with foreign companies to manage air traffic control at Kabul and other airports, while Afghans trained by experts from Uzbekistan and Qatar are now in charge.
