Russian forces have decided to quarantine Mariupol over a possible cholera outbreak, the city’s mayor’s councilor revealed on Monday.
“We are seeing the city being isolated.”, said Petro Andryyshchenko, quoted by the BBC. “The word ‘cholera’ is mentioned within the citybetween the occupying authorities and those responsible”.
But the reported public health problems did not end there. According to the same source, Mariupol is practically uninhabitable due to the smell of corpses.
The most difficult thing in the city is to hide the smell”, explained the counselor. “Dumpsters in the center of the city, morgues in shopping centers and corpses under the rubble. (…) Every day that passes increases the heat, and [os cadáveres] increase the smell, with more and more flies”.
The video shared by the counselor on Telegram belongs to a local resident who had to go to a beach outside Mariupol to escape the smell, explains Andryyshchenko.
Every day, about 1,500 to 2,000 people line up at one of the Russian aid centers in the city. According to Petro Andryyshchenko, only 400 humanitarian aid kits, consisting mainly of food, are available daily.
People queue for six hours in the heat and sun to no avail,” he also said on Telegram. “There is no drinking water, and it is not possible to buy it in the territory of the ‘humanitarian barracks’”.
Andryyshchenkog also denounces that, every day, about 10 people are transported to the hospital of the city after fainting in line and that the “smell of the morgue, located 200 meters away, intensifies every day.”
According to the mayor’s advisor, there is no other way to get food in the city, and the inhabitants of Mariupol must resort to the “humiliation and intimidation of Russian humanitarian aid”.
