Pretending to be ex-Mexican soldiers, militants tried to kidnap family members from Texas who were visiting the border state of Nuevo Leon this week. The incident took place at a Holiday Inn hotel on one of Monterrey’s main subway streets.
According to the testimonies of the victim’s father, who did not want to be named, the Texas family went to Monterrey for a vacation and planned a week of sightseeing and shopping.
On the day of the kidnapping, the parents went out for dinner and dropped off their teenage daughter at a hotel with her younger siblings. A short time later, they received a call from a man who identified himself as the Mexican army and said that he and his men had children and would be killed if ransom was not provided.
The father suspects hotel staff involvement or bullying. When he returned, the hotel reception was empty and no one came out until the authorities arrived. The police entered the room and fought the kidnappers until they surrendered.
Only one of the gunmen, identified as “Francisco”, 42, from Veracruz, a former Mexican soldier, was arrested by the authorities. It is not yet clear what happened to the other suspects.
Nuevo León has seen a sharp rise in violence in recent months due to the fierce battle between the Sinaloa cartel and the Los Zetas faction of the Del Noreste cartel. The problem was exacerbated by the criminal infiltration of the Fuerza Civil State Police.
