A man known as the “grave digger” testified about mass graves in Syria during a hearing on the conflict in Syria with US senators.
Emphasizing that mass graves are full of victims of the conflict in the country, he noted that he left Syria in 2018, but spoke to others who had recently fled and they told him that mass graves were still being excavated. .
The “gravedigger”, dressed in black from head to toe, described the crimes he witnessed while working as a civilian worker in a mass grave in Syria from 2011 to 2018.
The United Nations has estimated the death toll in the Syrian conflict at about 400,000 Syrians in a war that has lasted more than a decade since 2011 and displaced millions more inside and outside Syria.
Prior to the war, the “grave digger” worked as an administrative clerk in the Damascus municipality, but in 2011, regime intelligence officials visited his office and ordered him to work for them.
“Three trucks full of 300 to 600 bodies of victims of torture, shelling and slaughter were entering, twice a week, as well as three or four trucks carrying 30 to 40 bodies of civilians who were executed,” the digger said. “In Sednaya prison.”
“Gravedigger” managed to escape from Syria in 2018, tracked his family to Europe, and testified in a German court in Koblenz about the crimes he witnessed, saying that he fled because of other people he worked with and recently escaped. They know that mass graves are still being dug.
“It’s my heart to know that many are currently being subjected to inhumane torture by the Assad regime,” he added.
“In some cases, I know exactly where the mass graves that are still being excavated are located,” he continued. “I know this because others who worked with me in mass graves have recently escaped and confirmed what we hear.”
“Empowering Assad enables Putin, while stopping Assad hurts the Russian dictator. We must learn from the past and not allow this moment to happen again,” he said.
“Although hundreds of thousands have been killed and disappeared and millions displaced, the worst is yet to come, but it can be prevented, but I,” the gravedigger called on US senators. “Please do not wait a second. I’m asking you to take action.” “.
