Angolan justice only persecuted “chicken thieves” for years

The Angolan president, João Lourenço, said on Thursday that political power does not condition the freedom of action of the Angolan courts, which are no longer “gagged” and only prosecute “chicken thieves”.

João Lourenço, who gave a press conference to 12 Angolan media, said that has no intention of abandoning the fight against corruption and that there is still “a lot to recover”.

I declare that today there is a “completely different” image of justice who for many years “has only been after chicken thieves”, which has changed from one day to the next since he was elected in 2017.

If we are going to analyze, above all, the cases that have gone through the Supreme Court, it is a new reality that was previously unthinkable. It was unthinkable that certain figures could sit at the bar of the courts”, he stressed.

For the President of the Republic, “this only shows that the courts have much more independence and freedom of action, otherwise they would continue to be gagged by the political power that would say ‘don’t mess around here, don’t mess around’. there’ or ‘don’t mess with this or that’”.

“Political power is not acting like this, our justice has complete freedom to act,” he stressed, pointing to the Lussati case as an example of non-interference, which involved figures linked to his Military House.

“In the case of the looting that involved figures from the Military House itself, no one ever thought that the political power was going to let justice advance with this case and this case is not forgotten, it is not frozen, it will come to light. public very soon, whatever God wants”, said the Angolan chief executive, ensure a strong intention to combat corruption, regardless of who the targets are.

“Justice is not being selective, it is knocking on the door of those who have the presumption that there is a crime until the contrary is proven,” he reinforced.
