The Greek government rejected Turkey’s requests to disarm the islands in the Aegean, saying Turkey’s claims about the islands were “baseless myths”.
Greek government spokesman Yiannis Oikonomou denied the statements of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan calling on Greece to disarm the islands with special status in the Aegean.
Oikonomou described Erdogan’s statements as “antihistorical statements and baseless myths that cannot challenge or even replace international law and international agreements.” ethatimerine reports.
“Absolutely nothing can violate our sovereign rights and national sovereignty in any way. That’s why we call on Turkey to stop its provocative tactics and understand that the only way in the context of international law is a responsible and honest dialogue.”

“We recommend that Greece stop arming the islands without military status and act in accordance with international agreements,” President Erdogan said on Thursday, noting that Greece violated the agreements by militarizing the islands in the Aegean.
“I’m not kidding, I’m serious. This country is determined,” he said.
“Turkey will not renounce its rights arising from international agreements, nor will it give up its rights in the Aegean,” he said.
Greece said Erdogan’s interpretation of the agreements to militarize the islands was deliberately wrong and that Greece has the right to defend itself.

The dispute over the Aegean islands is no longer new, and Turkey is eyeing the islands under the Blue House Plan, a sprawling doctrine that lays serious claims over much of the eastern Mediterranean.
