Tunisian migrant arrested after hundreds of mysterious ‘syringe attacks’ in France

French authorities have received hundreds of reports of mysterious “syringe attacks” over the past few months and have now made their first arrest in Toulon detaining a Tunisian immigrant.

Since the beginning of March, there have been so-called syringe attacks all over France. Police said they had received at least 350 different reports of people being attacked with a sharp object at various events, such as nightclubs.

The Tunisian arrested in Toulon is said to be an unemployed 20-year-old illegal immigrant living in the country without proof of residence and already known to the French justice system when he was convicted of domestic violence in 2020. South West reports.

Toulon prosecutor Samuel Finiels said the illegal immigrant denied all charges against him and that two eyewitnesses saw a man with a syringe over the weekend.

A total of 21 people reported syringe attacks on the night a television program was recorded on the beach of Toulon, and a Tunisian was later arrested. He has since been charged with assault and placed in a pre-trial detention centre.

The Toulon prosecutor’s office did not elaborate on whether any substance was given to victims during the attacks and noted eight clinical trials are ongoing. Most of the victims allegedly reportedly had no symptoms.

Of the 350 complaints received in France since March, about 200 were received in the last month, but no reason has yet been found for the attacks.

The incident is not limited to France, as other European countries have reported similar attacks on nightclubs and elsewhere such as Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK, victims have reported different responses.

“We went out [the bar] breathe fresh air… then I lost control of my body, my ability to walk, hold my head, couldn’t speak – I was sick all over the place,” says 19-year-old Stafford resident Eva Keeling. Washington Post last week.
