Montenegro has seized 44 properties belonging to 34 Russian citizens under sanctions imposed by the European Union (EU) and other Western allies over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, local media reported.
“The (Montenegro) State Property and Land Registry Administration has made decisions restricting the alienation of 44 properties in Montenegro to 34 Russian citizens on whom sanctions have been imposed,” reads a note from the Ministry. of the Interior, quoted by local media.
The official statement recalls that Montenegro, a candidate for accession to the European Union (EU), has fully aligned its foreign and security policy with the community.
Russian citizens own or co-own some 19,000 apartments and facilities in Montenegro, the vast majority on the Adriatic coast.
Montenegro officially agreed to the sanctions against Russia at the beginning of last April.
Previously, the country closed its airspace to Russian planes, and on Monday Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov chose to cancel his visit to Serbia, a neighboring country of Montenegro, which did not adhere to the sanctions.
