A new “epidemic” in North Korea

North Korea on Thursday announced an uncertain gastrointestinal epidemic that could put more pressure on the isolated health care system in the country, which is battling an unprecedented wave of coronavirus infections.

According to the Korean Central News Agency, Kim Jong Un, the leader of the country on Wednesday, sent medicines to the western port city of Hago to help patients with “acute intestinal epidemic”.

The agency did not specify the number of infected people or details of the nature of the disease.

“(Kim) stressed the need to curb the epidemic as soon as possible by taking precise measures to quarantine suspected cases to limit their prevalence and to confirm cases through epidemiological surveys and scientific experiments,” the agency said.

The outbreak comes as North Korea grapples with its first confirmed outbreak of the coronavirus. A state of emergency was declared last month due to concerns about a shortage of vaccines and medical equipment.

And Pyongyang announced that it had registered 26,010 new cases of “fever” symptoms today, Thursday, and that the total number of people infected by the end of April had approached 4.56 million. The number of victims of this disease was 73 people.

North Korea reports daily number of people with “fever”, not Covid-19, apparently due to lack of testing tools.
