The extreme right and the extreme left elect Franco-Portuguese deputies in the French elections

The legislative elections in France bring new Portuguese faces to the National Assembly with Nathalie da Conceição Carvalho representing the extreme right, Emmanuel Fernandes on the left and three more deputies who renew their mandate.

Nathalie da Conceição Carvalho is part of the wave of almost 90 deputies from the National Union of Marine Le Pen who won a seat in Parliament. She is Franco-Portuguese was elected in the Paris region, in Essone, winning the left-wing coalition candidate.

In 2017, Nathalie da Conceição Carvalho had already been a candidate in another constituency in Essone, without being elected at the time. This Franco-Portuguese woman calls herself a “patriot”, according to “Le Parisien” and she is a businesswoman in the events area, having not held any political office so far.

For Emmanuel Fernandes also makes his debut in the National Assembly. The deputy of the left-wing coalition Nova União Popular Ecologista e Social (Nupes) triumphed in his constituency in Strasbourg, after a night full of emotions in which his opponent was declared the winner.

In an interview with the Lusa agency, Emmanuel Fernandes said before his election that there is “a social emergency” in France.

Also on the left, and inserted in Nupes, Christine Pires Beaune, in the Puy de Dôme region, won re-election. This socialist deputy of Portuguese origin will thus fulfill her third term in the National Assembly.

Ludovic Mendes, deputy of the Republic in the March, party of President Emmanuel Macron, was also re-elected. Ludovic Mendes won his Moselle constituency, and the 35-year-old MP is now starting his second term.

Another Franco-Portuguese figure who renewed his mandate was Dominique da Silva, also a candidate for the Republic on the Move. The deputy from Val d’Oise passed second in the first round but won his seat on Sundayobtaining 50.4% of the votes.

Elected for the first time, Antoine Vermorel-Marques is not Portuguese, but married to a Portuguese woman, having adopted his wife’s last name, something common among French couples. This new deputy from the French right was elected in the Loire region and defeated the Republican candidate in March.

President Emmanuel Macron lost his parliamentary majority in the National Assembly on Sunday, having elected 245 deputies. The Nupes coalition obtained second place with 131 deputies, without knowing what configuration it will adopt in Parliament. The National Union, led by Marine Le Pen, was the winner of the night, managing to elect 89 deputies, multiplying by 11 the number of deputies elected in 2017.
