“Lithuania’s decision to stop the transit of goods through the Kaliningrad region of Russia is unprecedented, this is a violation of everything, we understand that this issue is related to a similar decision of the European Union to include transport in the Sanctions. We also consider this illegal.
In turn, the government of the Kaliningrad region confirmed that “goods included in the sanctions list, the transit of which through Lithuania is prohibited, will be delivered by waterways and will be redistributed to sea transport, including ferries.”
Lithuanian Railways has notified the Russian Kaliningrad Railway of halting the transit of a number of goods subject to European Union sanctions as of June 18.
For his part, the governor of the Kaliningrad region, Anton Alikhanov, previously confirmed that “Lithuania’s ban on the transit of certain goods to the region is illegal and does not comply with the provisions on Lithuania’s accession to the European Union.” He stated that “a ferry crossing in the Kaliningrad region will serve new parties due to the restriction of transit through Lithuania. Transportation of oil products to the Kaliningrad region through Lithuania continues unhindered until August 10.”
