A Mexican border state prosecutor has faced drug trafficking charges after US authorities reported finding more than 66 pounds of methamphetamine in his vehicle while trying to enter California.
Last week, Octavio Andre Espino Torres attempted to ship his 2016 Nissan Versa through the San Ysidro International Port of Entry, a criminal case filed in federal court has emerged. US Customs and Border Protection officers scanned his vehicle as it crossed the border using an X-ray machine and a police dog. Authorities allegedly discovered 45 bricks in the back of the car containing 66 kilos of methamphetamine.
Since then, a California Magistrate has ordered Espino’s detention without bail.
Before Espino was arrested, he was a senior prosecutor in the Baja California Attorney General’s Office (FGE).
FGE explained that Espino first worked in juvenile delinquency, but was later promoted to administrative roles as chief administrative assistant. However, he does not have the official title of AG secretary. The announcement came after news outlets in Mexico claimed Espino was the personal assistant of Ricardo Ivan Carpio Sánchez of Baja California.
Espino’s arrest came at a time when Baja California remains one of California’s busiest drug trafficking centers.
