In a draft resolution, members of the Russian Security Council condemned “in the strongest possible terms the attack on Damascus International Airport on Friday, June 10th. The closure of the airport and the suspension of all United Nations Humanitarian Air Service flights, with serious humanitarian consequences.

The Security Council member stressed that “this could further complicate the delivery of humanitarian assistance and have dire humanitarian consequences for more than two million Syrians in need.”

In the draft, Council members considered that “such strikes violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and neighboring countries, destabilize and destabilize the security of the entire region,” and “emphasize that the actions of the Israeli Air Force impede and pose a threat to the security of international and domestic civil air traffic.”

They “reaffirm the prohibition against attacks on the civilian population and infrastructure, including civilian objects essential for the survival of civilians”, noting “the importance of holding accountable violations of international humanitarian law”.

Members expressed “concern that the escalation of violence and the risk of miscalculation could lead to more instability in the region” and called on “all concerned parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid further escalation.”
