The arrival of the soldiers came shortly after a criminal organization halted all activities in the city over the weekend, hijacking tractor-trailers and buses to block the main streets. The militants also burned vehicles to maintain their blockade. This effort came in response to a recent military offensive against local Gulf Cartel agents.
The arrival of new troops in Matamoros also followed the deployment of the border town of Nuevo Laredo, the stronghold of the Cartel del Noreste group in Los Zetas. It remains unclear what the impact of the troops will be, as federal authorities typically work for several months to prevent clashes with militants. The aim is to prevent large-scale shootings as part of a policy dictated by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Federal leaders tried to curb the violence by reminding the public that criminal cartels are still citizens. Despite this, record levels of violence are taking place in formerly quiet cities.
