The Mexican army sent 200 soldiers to the cartel-controlled border town near Texas.

The Mexican army sent 200 soldiers this week to the border town of Matamoros, which was formerly controlled by the Gulf Cartel.

The arrival of the soldiers came shortly after a criminal organization halted all activities in the city over the weekend, hijacking tractor-trailers and buses to block the main streets. The militants also burned vehicles to maintain their blockade. This effort came in response to a recent military offensive against local Gulf Cartel agents.

The arrival of new troops in Matamoros also followed the deployment of the border town of Nuevo Laredo, the stronghold of the Cartel del Noreste group in Los Zetas. It remains unclear what the impact of the troops will be, as federal authorities typically work for several months to prevent clashes with militants. The aim is to prevent large-scale shootings as part of a policy dictated by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Federal leaders tried to curb the violence by reminding the public that criminal cartels are still citizens. Despite this, record levels of violence are taking place in formerly quiet cities.

Editor’s note: Breitbart Texas traveled to Mexico City and the states of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo Leon to gather citizen journalists willing to risk their lives to expose the cartels that silence their communities. If the pseudonym is not used, the authors face certain death at the hands of the various cartels operating in these areas, including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas.
