Biden signs executive order to mitigate effects of illegal abortion

US President Joe Biden on Friday signed an executive order aimed at mitigating the effects of the country’s abortion rights repeal, in response to mounting pressure from pro-abortion groups to take action.

The executive order directs the Department of Health to expand access to abortion pills, morning after pills and contraceptivesand warranty access to emergency medical care in cases of miscarriagesince these treatments can be denied in states where any type of abortion has become illegal.

“It’s scandalous and dangerous,” the president said. “This order requires the Department to ensure that all patients who experience miscarriages receive the medical care they need under federal law.”

The Department of Health will initiate these procedures and inform the President In 30 days.

Speaking at the signing, Joe Biden said the order also directs the Justice Department to protect women from bullying and ensure they can travel to other states looking for abortion services.

The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) regulator is also mandated to restrict the sale of electronically collected personal data to anti-abortion groups, at a time when there are fears that prosecutors in states where abortion has been made illegal will use information extracted from smartphones, applications and other means for criminal cases.

Biden’s executive action does not respond to calls by pro-abortion groups to provide abortion services in all federal territories. The administration has been skeptical of this alternative because of the danger that both patients and physicians involved in abortion procedures will be immediately criminalized in the states.

The pressure on the White House will continue on Saturday, July 9 with a demonstration in favor of abortion organized by the Women’s March, in which thousands of people are expected.

The federal right to abortion, contemplated since 1973 in a judicial decision, was revoked by the Supreme Court on June 24.
