Tanzanian authorities have announced that they have dispatched a team of doctors and health experts to the southeast of the country to investigate a mysterious illness that has killed three people.
The disease, whose symptoms include nosebleeds, fever, headache and fatigue, was detected in Lindi district, Chief Medical Officer of the government, Iyilo Sechaloi, said in a statement on Wednesday.
He added: “The government invited the people to calm down by forming a team of experts who are still investigating this unknown disease.”
He revealed that 13 people have contracted the disease, three of whom have died.
Cichaloi explained that the patients’ test results showed that they were not infected with the Ebola, Marburg or Corona virus.
And Ghana announced last week that it had identified two cases of the Marburg virus, which causes a hemorrhagic fever that can be fatal, like Ebola.
At a rally on Tuesday, Tanzanian President Samia Solhu Hassan said the “strange” disease discovered in Linde may be caused by the “increasing mixing” of humans and animals due to deteriorating environmental conditions.
