Church of England says it has ‘no official definition of woman’

ROME. A senior Church of England bishop said this week that the church has no “official definition” for a woman amid the changing gender understanding in the world today.

Adam Kendry, a member of the General Synod, the legislature of the Church of England, asked in writing: “What does it mean to be a woman in the Church of England?” At the synod meeting July 8-12.

In his reply, Dr. Robert Innes, Bishop of the Church in Europe and Chairman of the Faith and Health Commission, which currently does not have an “official definition” of a woman.

“Until recently, there is no official definition that reflects the fact that such meanings are evident in the marriage rite,” said Bishop Innes.

“However, the LLF project has begun to explore the complexity of marriage regarding gender identity and has highlighted the need for extra care and attention in understanding our similarities and differences as humans created in God’s image,” he added.

The Church of England is only the latest in progressive voices expressing skepticism about the nature of femininity.

Last March, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson refused to reveal the identity of the woman during her confirmation hearing as a US Supreme Court judge.

Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) asked Judge Jackson, “Can you define the word woman?” she asked. “I am not a biologist,” Jackson replied.

Bishop Innes’ response was met with mixed reviews from members of the Church of England.

Reverend Angela Berners-Wilson, Britain’s first female pastor, said she was “not entirely satisfied” with the response, but added that “we need to be very sensitive and perhaps reconsider our boundaries”.

On the other hand, Maya Forstater, executive director of the Sex Matters campaign group, described Bishop’s response as “surprising.”

“When the government changes the definition of a woman in the Gender Recognition Act, the Anglican Church can adhere to its longstanding rational understanding, whether it’s biology or the Bible,” he said.

“Surprisingly, they easily abandoned the definition of a man or woman for a change of state, as if that fundamental fact didn’t matter,” he said.
