Pope Francis: ‘eat less meat’ to save planet

ROME. This week, Pope Francis urged young people in Europe to eat less meat to stop global warming and save the planet.

“There is an urgent need to reduce the consumption of not only fossil fuels but also many unnecessary substances,” the Pope told attendees at the EU youth conference on Monday. “Eating less meat is also appropriate in some parts of the world: it will also help protect the environment.”

The Pope encouraged young people to live simply and strictly as a kind of environmental responsibility.

He told them, “You can strive for a life of dignity and moderation, free from luxury and waste, so that everyone in our world can live a life of dignity.”

“Don’t rush to mermaids who offer a luxurious life for a small piece of the world,” she said. Instead, have a ‘broad view’ that can encompass the rest of humanity, which is much larger than our small continent.”

In his speech, the Pope also encouraged young people to read his encyclopedia on the environment. Laudato C. Find a “strong reason” for a commitment to “holistic ecology.”

Francis says the future of the planet is in the hands of the young and only they can reverse the current environmental self-destruct path.

He said the time is now more right than ever for “concrete initiatives” to save the planet.

“If you don’t reverse this self-destructive trend, it will be difficult for others to do so in the future,” he warned.
