Swedish prosecutors say the fatal stabbing of a woman at a “Politicians’ Week” event in Visby this month has been escalated to terrorism investigation as some sources say the suspect is suspected of ties to neo-Nazis.
The Swedish prosecutor’s office released a press release this week, reporting that the investigation into the murder of 64-year-old Ing-Marie Wieselgren, who was stabbed to death during Politics Week, where she attended several seminars, continues.
Police later detained Theodor Engstrom, 32, in connection with a fatal stabbing, and some say he was previously linked to the neo-Nazi group Nordic Resistance Movement (NMR), SVT reported.
Although Engstrom, who confessed to the murder, was initially suspected of murder, the case has now been reclassified as terrorism.
As Prosecutor Petra Goetell has said before, it is unclear whether the alleged links to NMR relate to the new crime classification. Wieselgren was chosen because of his links to psychiatry.

“There were reports last week that he was suffering from mental illness and was acting out while under the influence of drugs,” Goetell said. “We don’t see a link with MRI at this time.”
He told me why he did what he did. I would say he was targeting psychiatry,” Goethell told SVT, “He got what he was doing. If he repents, it is more difficult to answer. ”
The alleged terrorist attack was not the first in recent years to involve individuals with previous NMR ties.
Three men were charged with attempted murder in connection with attacks targeting immigrants and left-wing groups in Sweden in 2017. Three were reportedly NMR members who were dissatisfied with the group’s reluctance to use violent methods to further its political goals.
