European embargo is aimed at Russian gold

According to data from the World Gold Council, Russia is the second largest producer of gold in the world, producing more than 331 tons last year.

But Russia’s Finance Ministry revealed that it produced 346.42 tons of gold in 2021, up from 340.17 tons in 2020.

According to official U.S. estimates, Moscow has between $100 billion and $140 billion in gold reserves, roughly 20 percent of the Russian central bank’s reserves.
