National airports handle 5.3 million passengers in May and are approaching 2019

National airports mobilized 5.3 million passengers, with an average daily arrival of 87,100 passengers, approaching the levels recorded before the pandemic, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), released this Friday.

According to quick air transport statistics, in May, domestic airports were also busy 19,600 tons of cargo and mailcorresponding to year-on-year variations of 319.8% and 20.7%, respectively (+569.2% and +30.9% in April, in the same order).

In the month under review, there was a daily average arrival at national airports of 87,100 passengers (83,900 in the previous month), approaching the value observed in May 2019, when 90,600 passengers disembarked.

Considering the passengers disembarked in May, 82.1% corresponded to international traffic (72.5% in the same month of 2021), mostly from the European continent (70.7% of the total).

As for passengers on board, 81.5% corresponded to international traffic (68.1% in May 2021), with the main destination being airports on the European continent (72% of the total).

In the first five months of the year, the number of passengers increased by 434.4% (-15.5% compared to the same period in 2019), “continuing the trend towards the levels registered in the pre-pandemic period,” says the INE.

In that period, Lisbon airport handled 50.5% of total passengers (9.4 million) and registered a growth of 465.8% compared to the same period in 2021 (-19.5% compared to the same period in 2021). 2019).

Between January and May 2022, the United Kingdom surpassed France and emerged as the main country of origin of flights, with a year-on-year growth of 966.4% in the number of disembarked passengers.

France occupied the second position and registered an increase of 381.9% compared to the same period in 2021, while Spain occupied the third position, as the main country of origin and destination.
