Glasgow City Council has been accused of conspiring to remove some allegedly “controversial” statues from the city’s main square, despite previously insisting that rumors of such a plan were “nonsense”.
Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city and formerly the second city of the British Empire, is now in George’s Square, the reigning monarch III, who was defeated by the American colonies.
Among the statues currently in the plaza are the Duke of Wellington, former British prime minister and commander of the Battle of Waterloo; Sir Robert Peel, former prime minister and founder of the modern police force; and William Ewart Gladstone, who served four terms as prime minister in more civilized times, had a reputation as formidable as the wartime leader Sir Winston Churchill is today.
But after the riots at Black Lives Matter in 2020, Peel’s statue in George Square was vandalized with the communist sickle-hammer symbol and the slogan “ACAB” (All cops are bastards), and Gladstone, born in 1809, named slavery “the most heinous crime” disgraced because his father was a slave owner.
Other statues and monuments in George Square have been criticized for their association with the British Empire.
Sketches of the proposed reconstruction of the site are now presented. Scottish Daily Express A few statues seem to need cleaning, but only seven of the 12 existing statues are visible.
This is despite the council previously dismissing concerns that the reconstruction to remove the statues was “absurd” and that there was “no predetermined plan to remove any statues” – the term “predetermined” appears to have been used. deliberately placed, now the statues really seem to be removed.

Robert Poll of the Save Our Statues campaign commented on the post, “It will always be clear that Glasgow City Council will use this redesign as an excuse to remove the ‘problematic’ statues. Scottish Daily Express.
“The only complaint came from a small number of vocal activists, including a report on ax slavery commissioned by the Council to coincide with this design change,” Poll said.
“A smart word counselling puts ‘repositioning’ on the same footing as leaving the field completely. But if asked directly, the people of Glaswew will tell them indefinitely to get their hands on their historic statues,” he suggested.
