Emigrants in the PALOP sent 27 million in May, an increase of 14.2%

Remittances from emigrants in Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP) rose 14.2% in May, from €24 million in May 2021 to €27.4 million in May this year, according to the Bank of Portugal.

According to data provided this Wednesday by the financial regulator, the funds sent represent a increase of almost 30% compared to the amount sent in May 2020at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.

As usual, Angolan values ​​represent the vast majority of the total, with Portuguese emigrants in Angola sending 26.6 million euros in May, 13.9% more than the 23.4 million sent in May last year.

Globally, remittances from emigrants rose 1.15% in May, to 288.07 million euros, while those sent by foreigners in Portugal rose 8.9%, to 42.6 million euros.

Portuguese working abroad sent 288.07 million euroswhich represents an increase of 1.15% compared to the 284.8 sent in May of last year.

On the contrary, foreigners working in Portugal sent 42.61 million euros to their countries of origin, which is equivalent to an increase of 8.92% compared to the 39.12 million sent in May 2021.
