Demonstrators from the Coordination Framework, which includes Iraqi Shiite political forces, with the exception of the Sadr Movement, began to withdraw from the outskirts of the Khadra region in the capital Baghdad.

This happened after the general secretary of Asaib Ahl al-Haq, Qais Khazali, called on the demonstrators who responded to the call of the coordination structure to leave the vicinity of the Green Zone and return to their homes.

Yesterday, the Organizing Committee of the “Coordination Framework” in Iraq called for a demonstration tomorrow in the Green Zone after events that warn of a suspicious coup, pointing out that “the events herald the delegitimization of the state and the democratic process.”

The call came after Iraqi Sadr Movement leader Muqtada al-Sadr said in a statement yesterday that “the spontaneous, peaceful revolution that liberated the Green Zone, as a first stage, is a great opportunity for all people stung by the fire of injustice, terrorism , corruption, occupation and dependence”. He noted that “I hope that the tragedy of missing the first golden opportunity in 2016 will not be repeated.” He considered that “this is a great opportunity to fundamentally change the political system, constitution and elections.”

The Sadr Movement launched an open sit-in at the Iraqi parliament building after protesters from the movement stormed the building, knocking down concrete barriers and entering the green zone. While condemning the nomination of the Coordinating Council as a candidate for prime minister, they consider him close to former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, a political opponent of Muqtada al-Sadr.
