Xi Jinping warned Joe Biden twice. The first was in November of last year, in a phone call between the two presidents. The US leader expressed concern about Beijing’s actions towards Taiwan. The Chinese counterpart replied acidly: “That is playing with fire, and if you play with fire, you will get burned.”
The expression was resurrected by Xi himself five days ago. Faced with speculation that the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, could visit the island, the Chinese president again warned Biden in a phone call: “Whoever plays with fire ends up getting burned”.
