Ukraine: IL approves resolution for Portugal and its allies to strengthen support

The Liberal Initiative resolution defends that Portugal must reinforce “its commitment” to support the reconstruction of Ukraine and support “the process of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.”

This Friday, parliament approved a Liberal Initiative resolution for the Portuguese Government to continue supporting the defense of Ukraine, reinforcing its diplomatic, economic and military efforts in coordination with allied countries.

This resolution was voted against by the PCP, the Left Bloc abstained and the rest of the parties voted in favor..

In the Liberal Initiative diploma, the PSD/CDS executive is recommended to “reiterate unequivocal support for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, within its internationally recognized borders, and “Continue to provide political, economic, humanitarian and military support for as long as necessary to ensure Ukraine’s victory in its defense against Russian aggression.”

In the text, IL then emphasizes that Portugal must continue “collaborating with its international partners, particularly within the European Union, NATO and other international organizations will strengthen military support for Ukraineincluding the supply of military equipment and further specialized training of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The Lisbon Government, according to the IL court, must also defend “accountability for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Russian Federation in the field of war of aggression, by supporting international initiatives that seek the creation of a court to try these crimes.”

The resolution maintains that Portugal is required to reinforce “its commitment” to support the reconstruction of Ukraine and support “the process of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.”ensuring that “it continues to receive technical and financial assistance to implement the necessary reforms, respecting the accession criteria related to the rule of law, human rights and the fight against corruption.”

The Liberal Initiative also wants Portugal to “condemn attempts by certain States to weaken support for Ukraine within the European Union and strengthen cooperation with countries committed to ensuring a unified and robust response to Russian aggression.”
