Home loan amount reaches its highest value in almost 10 years

Housing loans reached 100,827 million euros in September, the highest value since February 2015, according to data published this Friday by the Bank of Portugal (BdP).

At the end of September, The ‘stock’ of housing loans amounted to 100,827 million euroswhich represented an increase of 1.7% year-on-year, and 471.7 million euros in total, thus maintaining “the acceleration trajectory that has been registered since January 2024.”

In credit to individuals as a whole, this indicator rose 2.3% year-on-year, to 130,927 million euros, an increase of 649 million euros compared to August.

Only in loans for consumption and other purposes, the increase was 4.4% year-on-year, up to 30,099.8 million euros, still growing by 177.7 million euros compared to the previous month.

At the end of the month analyzed, personal credit totaled 12,514.9 million euros, 6.0% more than in the same month of the previous year, while automobile credit experienced an increase of 8.6%, up to 8,204. 9 million euros. Along the same lines, the amount of credit card loans grew by 8.1%, to 3,173.3 million euros.

Regarding the ‘stock’ of credit to companies, at the end of September it was 72,343.1 million euros1.3% less than a year ago, but 83.2 million euros more than in August.

Large and micro companies had positive annual variation rates of 0.8% and 7.1%, respectively, while small and medium-sized companies had negative rates of -2.5% and -5.1%, respectively.

The industry and electricity (-2.2%) and commerce, transportation and accommodation (-1.0%) sectors presented negative annual variation rates, compared to -2.0% and -1.6%, respectively. in August. On the contrary, the construction and real estate sector presented a positive annual variation rate of 4.2% and 3.6% in August.
