These are the latest developments regarding Finland and Sweden joining NATO

Today, Tuesday, the White House announced that US President Joe Biden will sign the protocols for the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO.

The White House announced in a statement that “President Biden will issue a statement and sign the accession protocols of Finland and Sweden to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

It should be noted that the US Senate had previously agreed to the request of two countries to join this coalition.

Last Wednesday, Biden welcomed the Senate’s approval of Finland and Sweden’s NATO accession protocols, saying he “looks forward to the accession of the two countries.”

95 members of the Senate voted for the accession protocols of Finland and Sweden to NATO, while the number required for approval was 67, and only one MP voted against these two protocols.

The alliance’s 30 member states signed the necessary accession protocols on July 6 to invite two countries to join the alliance, but each NATO member still must ratify the invitation by legally ratifying the accession protocols, and the process is ongoing. It is one of the duties of the parliament of the countries and it probably takes between 6 and 8 months.

And the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, previously announced that Sweden and Finland joining NATO would mean more opposition.

It is worth noting that Finland and Sweden applied for NATO membership last May.
