Temperatures in excess of 40 degrees Celsius were recorded in several regions of China, including in the main southwestern city of Chongqing, as the country’s Meteorological Bureau continued to put on high alert in the face of a heat wave.

In Zhejiang province, where many factories are located, the eastern province broke the previous record for the most hot days this year, with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius in 31 days and 38 degrees in 16 days.

In addition to Chongqing, where temperatures reached 42.1 degrees Celsius on Saturday, the provinces of Hubei, Hunan, Shandong, Anhui, Xinjiang, Jiangxi and Fujian were among the provinces and regions where temperatures exceeded 35 degrees.

The thunderstorm helped Shanghai avoid breaking its own record of 40.9 degrees Celsius on Saturday, though many of the mall’s 25 million residents still complained of heat fatigue.

The China Meteorological Bureau warned last week that the country’s average temperatures have risen much faster than the world average over the past 70 years and will remain “much higher” in the future as climate change concerns intensify.
