Mexican authorities have announced that the body of freelance journalist Juan Aragon López has been found in the country’s northwest in what is believed to be a new murder in one of the country’s bloodiest press periods to date.

Journalist Lopez ran a Facebook news page in San Luis, Rio Colorado, in the northwestern state of Sonora, close to the US border. The authorities were informed of his disappearance on 9 August.

The 62-year-old man has been identified by his fingerprints, a Sonora prosecutor’s office source told AFP, hours after prosecutor Indira Contreras told reporters a body was found on him. Tattoos similar to Archon’s.

The prosecutor’s office said in a statement that “the autopsy showed that death was the result of a traumatic brain injury from a sharp object,” adding that this “does not rule out any hypotheses during the course of the investigation.”

According to Reporters Without Borders, Arkhon “worked alternately in the press and at a local restaurant.”

And his recent news posts on his Facebook page called “What Are You Afraid of” involved drug seizures and the return of many stolen items.

Notably, at least 13 journalists have been killed since the start of the year in Mexico, one of the world’s most dangerous countries for the press, according to rights groups.

Since 2000, more than 150 media workers have been killed in this country, and in most cases their killers have gone unpunished.
