The Sudanese Civil Defense announced: “The country’s flood death toll has risen to 77, with 30 injured, in addition to thousands of houses collapsing.”
And AFP reported: “Flooding caused by heavy rains has destroyed more homes across Sudan, with the death toll rising to 66 since the start of the rainy season.”
Authorities noted earlier this week that “at least 50 people have died since the rains began in June.” National Civil Defense Council spokesman Abdel Jalil Abdel Rahim explained that “at least 28 people were injured during the same period”, noting that “about 24,000 houses and twenty government buildings were severely damaged or completely destroyed.”
Sudan was left without a government after a military coup in October that took the country off a short-term democratic path after Omar al-Bashir was overthrown in a popular uprising in 2019. About 136,000 people were affected by heavy rains and floods in 12 governorates of Sudan, including 18 governorates.
