Undersecretary for Digital Transformation Luukas Ilves confirmed the attacks on Twitter, calling them “the most extensive cyber attacks Estonia has faced since 2007”. And this even after cyber attacks have increased since the beginning of the war in Ukraine.
“The attacks were ineffective,” Luukas Ilves said, however. “Services were not disturbed. With a few brief and minor exceptions, the sites remained fully available throughout the day. The attack went virtually unnoticed in Estonia.”
Estonia. Soviet monuments taken from public places in the city of Narva
This Thursday, the attacks were motivated by Estonia’s decision to remove Soviet monuments from public space, starting with the T-34 tank in the city of Narva, on the border with Russia, which was dismantled to be placed in a museum.
In 2007, cyberattacks were also motivated by the removal of a statue from a square in Tallinn. The withdrawal of the symbol of the Soviet occupation provoked, at the time, violent demonstrations by the community of Russian origin.
