The President of the European Commission paid tribute on Monday to the courage of the Ukrainian people in the face of Russian military aggression, in a message released on the occasion of the European Day of Remembrance for the Victims of All Totalitarian and Authoritarian Regimes.

On August 23 we honor the memory of the victims of totalitarian and authoritarian regimes, in Europe and beyond. Today, on the 83rd anniversary of the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact —between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union— this date has a special meaning”, he begins referring to Von der Leyen in the message released by the community executive.

Next, the president of the Commission points out that, this year, Russian President Vladimir “Putin brought the horrors of war back to Europealong with the reminder that peace cannot be taken for granted”, commenting that “the painful memory of the past is not just a distant memory, having found an echo in Russia’s illegal and unjustified war against Ukraine”.

We are inspired by the courage of those who stood up to injustice then, and we express our respect and support for the many men and women who are forced to do so again today. The Ukrainian people are giving their lives to protect the values on which our Union is built. Today, more than ever, we are united against the Russian state-controlled propaganda that distorts history, spreads the conspiracy and punishes those who oppose it”, continues Von der Leyen.

“We will resolutely continue our work to combat disinformation. And we will make sure that those who opposed totalitarianism do not fall into oblivion”, concludes the president of the community executive.
