Texas police chief fired for ‘terrible decisions’ in Uvalde school shooting

The Chief of Police of the Uvalde School District, Texas, where 19 students and two teachers were killed in a shooting in May, he was fired on Wednesday, US media reported.

The Texas Tribune reported that the board of the Uvalde school district, near the Mexican border, voted unanimously to fire Peter Arredondo three months after the shooting.

“abject failure”. Authorities could have arrested Texas school shooter in three minutes

The council accused Arredondo, then in charge of the operation, of having taken too long to order a police intervention.

The investigative committee report found that more than 370 local, state and federal officers responded to the shooting, but it took a while. over an hour to engage and take down the sniper18 years.

In a document released just hours before the meeting, Arredondo’s lawyers said the police would not be present at what they considered an “illegal and unconstitutional public lynching.”

The police chief, suspended since June 22, had asked the Uvalde school district council for full return to his duties, as well as the closure of a process that he considered unfounded.

Last week, Uvalde Schools Supervisor Hal Harrell had recommended firing Arredondo after a series of deficiencies were made public.

Before an investigative commission, the director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, Steven McCraw, considered that Arredondo made “terrible decisions” as the massacre unfolded.

McCraw claimed that enough officers could have responded to the shooting. three minutes later of the shooter having entered the school.

The start of classes at Uvalde schools has been postponed until September 6 while a series of safety improvements and the implementation of emotional and social support services are made, the school board said at the end of a meeting on Monday.
