Hundreds of people demonstrated in several parts of India to protest the government’s recent decision to release 11 Hindus convicted of gang raping a pregnant Muslim woman during the country’s 2002 riots.

Demonstrators in the capital New Delhi chanted slogans calling on the government of the northwestern state of Gujarat to reverse the decision, according to the Associated Press. The protesters also chanted songs affirming their solidarity with the victim, while similar protests were organized in several other states.

On March 3, 2002, Bilquis Bano, while pregnant, was gang-raped and 14 members of her family, including her three-year-old daughter, were killed by a mob during riots in Gujarat.

In early 2008, 11 Hindus were sentenced to life imprisonment in this case before being released on August 15, during India’s celebration of the 75th anniversary of the end of British rule.

The Associated Press quoted the victim, now in her 40s, as saying “the Gujarat government’s decision has shaken her faith in justice.”

Violence in Gujarat, one of the worst sectarian riots in India, has resulted in the deaths of more than 1,000 people, most of them Muslims.
