The video diary of Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, focused on the celebrations of Aviation Day, marked this Saturday. “It is a party that celebrates the people without whom the gift could not be imagined. And people without whom we cannot imagine the independence of our state,” Zelensky began.

In this video, the Ukrainian ruler says that “Russia expected to destroy our plane in the first hours of this full-scale invasion”. “Of course the enemy had a completely crazy target, as did many of his other targets,” he added. “The Ukrainian Air Force has preserved itself and from the first day of the invasion has performed honorably in combat missions.”

Zelensky says that in the space of six months, “18 pilots have already been honored with the title of Hero of Ukraine.” Calling the Ukrainian aviation “strong”, Zelensky promises that the country’s air force “will be among the most modern.”

Thanking the country’s pilots, Zelensky also took stock of the past few days, in a week that marked Ukraine’s Independence Day. Zelensky says that he signed “a series of decrees to celebrate representatives of various professions and groups in society (…) who have really helped in defense of Ukraine, in defense of independence, of our people (…)” .

Zelensky says that he has already asked various entities, from military and police forces, “central and regional, ministries and regional administrations and also representatives of the media” to receive appointments of persons who must be recognized by the presidency of Ukraine. The decree will be published this Sunday, said the President of Ukraine.

But according to Zelensky, this was not the only decree he signed this week. “There is also going to be another decree – very important, special – awarding distinctions to friends of Ukraine abroad, our partners and those who help us in this fight for freedom and life,” the Ukrainian government official announced. “These contributions are really significant,” he stressed, adding that “Ukraine will be eternally grateful.”

“The struggle for independence is the struggle of an entire nation and only then will it succeed,” Zelensky said. The Ukrainian president’s message ends with “eternal thanks to all those who help fight for freedom, for our state.”
