War in Ukraine. After controversy, the Vatican says that the Pope’s words should not be read as political positions

“Morally unjust, unacceptable, barbaric, senseless, disgusting and sacrilegious.” The Vatican on Tuesday clarified Pope Francis’ position on the war in Ukraine, noting that the armed confrontation was “initiated by the Russian Federation,” in a statement published in the place of the Holy See, after in recent months the conciliatory position of Pope Francis (especially when there was still hope for a peace negotiation mediated by the Vatican) has often been interpreted as support, or at least non-condemnation, to Vladimir Putin. But the Holy See leaves a warning: the Pope’s words cannot be interpreted as political positions.
