Former US President Donald Trump said Friday that the current head of state, Joe Biden, must suffer from “dementia”, after the harsh criticism he launched against supporters of the Republican politician.
“If you look at the words and meaning of Biden’s strange and angry speech, he is threatening America, including the possible use of military force. He must be crazy or have late-stage dementia,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, his social network.
On Thursday night, the US president warned that America’s democratic values are under attack by extremist forces loyal to his predecessor, in a televised prime-time address from Philadelphia.
With criticism explicitly directed at the “MAGA” movement, Donald Trump’s iconic campaign slogan ‘Make America Great Again’ [Tornar a América Grande de Novo]Joe Biden criticized the “blind” fanaticism of some followers of the former head of state, whom he described as a “threat” to the United States.
Much of what is happening today in our country is not normal. Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent extremism that threatens the very foundations of our Republic,” Biden said from Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the scene of some of the most important decisions in the country’s history, such as the adoption of the United States Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution.
In a speech of about 25 minutes, in which he raised his voice at times, Biden stressed that “equality and democracy are under attack” in the United States.
“There is no question that the Republican Party today is dominated, run, intimidated by Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans. And that is a threat to this country. (…) The MAGA Republicans made their choice. They embrace anger. They thrive on chaos. They do not live in the light of truth, but in the shadow of a lie. Together, we can choose a different path,” added the Democrat, reinforcing his belief that the majority of Republican voters are not extremists.
Biden did not ignore the attack on Capitol Hill, carried out on January 6, 2021 by supporters of Trump -who is expected to run for re-election in 2024-, stating that the “extremists” tried everything “to nullify the votes of 81 million of the people” and that was the prelude to future electoral interference.
It is my duty to tell the truth (…). The MAGA Republicans do not respect the Constitution. They do not believe in the rule of law and do not recognize the will of the people. They refused to accept the results of a free election,” Biden recalled, referring to the attack on the capitol.
In a speech often interrupted by applause and which takes place a few months before the midterm elections, scheduled for November, the President assured that he will not stand “idly watching elections stolen by people who simply refuse to accept that they have lost” .
The Democratic leader then urged Americans to go to the polls in November and reject Republican candidates who adhere to Trump’s brand of politics.
Faced with Trump’s reaction, Biden’s words were criticized by the leader of the Republican minority in the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, who demanded an apology from the president for “degrading and belittling his compatriots”, calling them “fascists”.
These statements come two months before the mid-term elections, which will decide the composition of much of the US Congress.
According to a poll published this Thursday by the Wall Street Journal, if the midterm elections were held this Friday, 47% of voters would vote for the Democrats and 44% for the Republicans.
In addition, Joe Biden is ahead of Donald Trump in voting intentions before a hypothetical confrontation in the 2024 presidential elections, with an advantage of six points.
Biden’s popularity has grown in recent weeks, in part due to the legislative successes of the current Democratic president, and the poll released by the newspaper reveals that 50% of voters intend to vote for him in the next presidential election.
