Milk is already more expensive but producers want more

The producers appealed and the effect was not long in materializing. Between August and September, the price of milk had visible increases on supermarket shelves. In the basket of basic products that the Observer has been preparing since April, to assess the impact of inflation on food, milk and sugar are the ones that show the most expressive price increases. In other products, despite the fact that food prices, such as cereals, are falling, this trend is not yet noticeable in the shopping basket.

In the basket made in August, a liter of Mimosa milk cost, on the websites of the three supermarkets consulted by the Observer, 0.77 euros, without promotion. With a discount, the price was 0.69 euros on two surfaces. In September, the increase was generalized. All supermarkets now sell the same liter of milk at 0.84 euros. A promotion applied by Continent places the price at 0.75 euros. That is, almost the same as the value practiced in August without promotion. Compared to 0.77 euros last month, the rise was 9%.

The rise is even more expressive when the comparison is made with the values of April, the month in which the first price collection was made. A liter of milk then cost, in two of the supermarkets, 0.62 euros. In five months, the price of milk increased by 35.5%.

This week, the Association of Milk Producers of Portugal (Aprolep) called on supermarket chains to raise the price to the producer, with the aim of reaching an average value of 50 cents per kilo. Right now, the average price is 43 cents. Producers who supply the Pingo Doce brand, after an update of the values, will already receive the 50 cents claimed.
