Russia’s permanent mission in Vienna said that “the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant was bombed yesterday by the Ukrainian armed forces,” explaining that “three shells exploded near a fuel depot, solid radioactive waste depots, and a power unit.”

Earlier, the AFP news agency reported that “Ukraine has announced that it has bombed the city that houses the Zaporozhye nuclear facility, which is under Russian control.” The UK Ministry of Defense also reported continued fighting in what it called “brutal” in southern Ukraine, including bombings in the Enerhodar region, near the Russian-occupied Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.

Russia announced the start of strategic military exercises “Vostok” in the east of the country, which will end on September 5. The UK Department of Defense said that “although Russia has said that 50,000 troops will take part in the exercise, it is unlikely that more than 15,000 will take part this year.”
