A Portuguese tourist died on the Cape Verdean island of Sal, hit by a car when he tried to jump when he saw that the car was going to have an accident, an official source informed Lusa on Monday.
According to the information provided by the Espargos police station, the accident occurred at 12:14 p.m. on Sunday (another two hours in Lisbon), in which a van was involved, used by tourists to make excursions around the island, and in which there were eight people in the interior car, including the driver.
It all happened when the car was going up behind another car towards Monte Curral, a hill with an elevation of 109 meters and that has a privileged view over the city of Espargos, which is why it is one of the most visited points by tourists.
However, the van began to lose speed and when doing the clutch, it did not work and began to skid.
EITHER Portuguese tourist tried to jump but was hit by the car next to the road protection wall and died in the local hospital.according to the same source.
Of the rest of the occupants, only one Spanish tourist suffered minor injuries and is well, while the driver of the vehicle was detained for errands and the place was cordoned off by the police and local civil protection.
Also known as “radar”, on the hill there is an air control tower of the nearby Amílcar Cabral International Airport, as well as several telecommunications antennas, guarded by a detachment of military personnel.
According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), in the second quarter of this year, Sal became the island most sought after by tourists in Cape Verde, representing 57.9% of entries in hotel establishments.
Portugal occupies the second position of origin of tourists, with 13.2%, only behind the United Kingdom, with 31.8% of total arrivals.
