The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are searching for a suspect involved in a mass knife attack on a Saskatchewan First Nations reserve that killed ten people and injured 18.
The RCMP said they are still looking for Miles Sanderson, 32, after his brother Damien Sanderson, who is believed to have been involved in the stabbing, was found dead on Monday last week.
According to the CBC broadcaster, the brothers are said to be behind a major stabbing that occurred early Sunday morning at the James Smith Cree National Wildlife Refuge and the nearby town of Weldon, Saskatchewan.
The RCMP was warned of the mass stabbing around 5:40 a.m. on Sunday, and shortly after 7:00 a.m., a high danger alert was issued to residents in the area, telling James Smith Cree residents to seek shelter in their homes. By 15:45 on Sunday, the police stated that ten people were killed and 15 were injured, adding that the attacks took place in at least 13 places and the number of injured was updated to 18.
On Monday, 31-year-old Damien Sanderson was found dead and did not appear to have self-inflicted the wounds, according to the RCMP. The RCMP also reported that they do not believe Miles Sanderson is still in the James Smith Cree area and that a vehicle that could be linked to the suspect was seen in the city of Regina on Sunday.
“We’re not only searching the city of Regina, but the state as well, even though we don’t know where it is,” said Evan Bray, Regina Police Chief.
While the motive for the mass stabbing attack is unclear, Miles Sanderson has a long criminal record and has been convicted a total of 59 times for a variety of crimes, including assault, assault with a gun, robbery and assault on police. He was formally released last year after serving part of a four-year sentence, but was arrested again last fall, but was released last year.
The mass stabbing, which occurred just two years after gunman Gabriel Wortman killed 22 people in Nova Scotia in April 2020, partially disguised as an RCMP officer and operating a replica RCMP vehicle, is the most recent mass injury incident in Canada in recent years. .
