Days after Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II left the country after 70 years in power, Denmark celebrated the 50th anniversary of Queen Margaret II’s accession to the throne, but the celebrations were much toned down in honor of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Margaret II is now the only remaining queen in Europe and has the longest reign after the late British monarch.
Denmark is marking the golden anniversary of the queen, who ascended the throne on January 14, 1972, with a series of low-key celebrations, after celebrations were expected across the country this weekend.
Danish media reported that the palace said the decision was made “at the Queen’s request”.
He credits Margaret with modernizing the monarchy and encouraging her two sons to marry non-nobles, the Guardian says.
He also stayed away from scandals and did not become political. The Queen has said many times that she will remain in office until her death.
