A landslide triggered by heavy rain has killed at least 14 people and injured seven in western Nepal, while rescuers continue to search for 10 more missing people.

“Rescuers have recovered the dead and injured from the rubble of five houses buried underground in the Acham district, about 450 km west of the capital Kathmandu,” Nepalese police spokesman Dan Bahadur Karke said.

Local media footage shows rescuers clearing mud with their hands in a desperate attempt to find missing people believed to be trapped.

Officials said the wounded were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Floods and landslides are common in mountainous Nepal, especially during the annual monsoon rains from June to September. At least 48 people have died in flash floods and landslides this year.
