Ten people were shot dead by gunmen who opened fire in a billiard room in Guanajuato, Mexico’s central state with the highest levels of violence, authorities said.

The State Attorney’s Office announced that the massacre took place Wednesday evening in Tarimoro County, noting that nine people were found dead in the hall and a tenth was wounded and taken to hospital, where he died.

Guanajuato, a thriving industrial state, has become the most violent in Mexico due to the conflict in it between the gangs “Santa Rosa de Lima” and “Generation Jalisco Nueva”, especially active in drug smuggling and stealing fuel.

Since the military launched its controversial war on drugs in December, more than 340,000 people have been killed in Mexico, most by criminal organizations, with another 100,000 still missing.
