Georgia Meloni, leader of the nationalist Brothers of Italy party, announced that Italian voters had given a clear mandate to form the next government and called for unity to help solve the country’s many problems.

“If we are called to govern this people, we will do it for all Italians with the aim of uniting people and glorifying what unites them, not what divides them. We will not betray your trust,” Meloni told reporters.

And the Democratic Party, which represents Italy’s centre-left early Monday morning, has already conceded defeat in the general election and said it will be the biggest opposition force in the next parliament.

“This is a sad evening for the country. The (right) have a majority in parliament, but not in the country,” Deborah Seracciani, a prominent Democrat in the Democratic Party, told reporters in the party’s first official commentary on the results.

Preliminary results showed that the right-wing coalition led by the Brothers of Italy party, led by Georgia Meloni, won with 43% of the vote and is on track to win a clear majority in parliament.
